A visitor from the west said about it:
"In Zanskar you can get a sunstroke on your head and frostbites at your feet all at the same time."

Because of its high location in Zanskar obtains an extremely contrast of temperature: in the winter until minus 40 degrees, in summer the temperature differences between up to 30 degrees during the day to under 10 degrees in the night. Additional there are the intense solar radiation, which not rarely induces eye infections to the population, and the ever present wind, that gets quite a good speed by howling through the mountain range, sweeping masses of sand and dust along with it.

The climate is extremely dry. The indian monsoon passes off at the high himalayan range and rarely reaches Zanskar. Therefore the Zanskari people depend on the glacier streams, not only for their fields but also for their drinking water.
